PRODUCTION TIPS

POSTAL CLASSES OVERVIEW-FIRST CLASS MAIL

  • Mailing must contain at least 500 addressed pieces if presorted or barcode. Must be 200 pieces if regular first class mailing permit imprint.
  • Letters must be 100% delivery point barcode and meet the domestic manual 810 standards.
  • Flats must be 100% zip +4 barcode and delivery point barcode and meet the standards in domestic manual C820.
  • Pieces must weigh 13 oz. or less
  • There is a surcharge for mail pieces over 6 1/8" in height and 11 ½" in length, if piece weighs less than 1 oz.
  • Postcard rate piece must be of uniform thickness not more than 4 ¼ " high and 6"long.
  • Letter size cannot be more than 6 1/8" in height and 11 ½ " in length. Thickness not to exceed ¼".
  • Annual fee for permit imprint and 1 time application fee.
  • Addresses must be updated every 180 days prior to mail date by an approved address update method if presort or barcode.
  • Tray labels for barcode mail must be barcode
  • There must be 62 bars in the barcode this does not count the 2 framing bars and must be at least 2 ½ inches long to meet barcode standards. The barcode contains the five-digit zip code, the plus 4 digits and the delivery point which is the last two digits of the street address the last number is the check digit.
  • When doing a barcoded selfmailer determine how many tabs are needed
  • Open at bottom- 2 tabs 1" from each lead edge.
  • Open at top- 1 tab in center top
  • No tab is needed for a flat size piece.
  • Refer to the DMM for other folds and amount of tabs needed.
